You're reading: Ukraine, Georgia sign plan for defense cooperation

Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Ukrainian Defense Minister Andriy Taran signed a plan for bilateral cooperation between the Defense Ministries of the countries on August 19, the Ukrainian Embassy in Georgia has said.

According to the embassy’s Facebook page, a delegation from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine headed by Defense Minister Andriy Taran arrived in Georgia on an official visit.

“During the meeting, the Defense Ministers of Ukraine and Georgia discussed security in Ukraine, Georgia and the Azov-Black Sea region, measures to counter the spread of coronavirus infection in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Georgian Defense Forces, and the development of cooperation in the NATO-Georgia-Ukraine format,” the embassy said in the statement.

Thus, following the meeting, the Defense Ministers of Georgia and Ukraine signed the plan of bilateral cooperation.

It is noted that during the visit, the Ukrainian delegation also laid a wreath at the memorial to the heroes who died for the unity of Georgia and visited the Occupation Line of the Tskhinvali Region of Georgia.

In turn, the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that during the meeting, the ministers paid special attention to the state and prospects of the implementation of the tasks of the defense reform.

“The agreements that we have reached will help strengthen the defense capability of our states, increase the operational and combat capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Defense Forces of Georgia, and generally guarantee peace and prosperity to our peoples,” Taran said.

He also said that one of the common challenges for Ukraine and Georgia is the restoration of the territorial integrity of states and the liberation of those occupied by Russia, which is the purpose of the strategic partnership, one of the main elements of which is cooperation in security and defense.

“This is my first official visit as Minister of Defense of Ukraine, and I am pleased that I made it to a friendly state, which firmly and consistently supports all measures aimed at restoring the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the head of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine said during a joint briefing with the Minister of Defense of Georgia.

In addition, Taran expressed appreciation to the Georgian side for comprehensive support in the political, defense, diplomatic spheres, as well as for the rehabilitation of the Ukrainian military and their families.
