You're reading: Ukraine joins US initiative Net Zero World

Ukraine at the climate summit in Glasgow (UK) became an equal partner of the U.S. initiative Net Zero World aimed at accelerating decarbonization processes by 2050, the press service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy said.

As noted, Ukraine, for its part, offers deeper cooperation in the field of nuclear energy, which “will help provide Europe with affordable energy without carbon dioxide emissions.”

“Nuclear generation is the basic generation in Ukraine. We have 15 nuclear power units producing more than 56% of the country’s electricity. We want to increase the capacity of nuclear power, build new units, start a program for the construction of small modular reactors. We have great human resources for this – a significant number of highly qualified specialists involved in the nuclear industrial complex,” Energy Minister Herman Haluschenko said during the presentation of the initiative in Glasgow.

He also spoke about plans for the development of renewable energy sources and noted the importance of Ukraine’s integration into the European energy system ENTSO-E.

The ministry said synchronization with ENTSO-E is the most important strategic goal of Ukraine in the energy sector.

The presentation of the American initiative Net Zero World took place on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. The report from the U.S. Department of Energy notes that Argentina, Chile, Egypt, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Ukraine are the founding countries of the partnership. Other countries will join them in the near future. The partnership will contribute to the implementation of national climate goals.

“The Net Zero World initiative signals America’s proactive stance in working with countries to lead a global transition to net zero emissions by 2050 and a commitment to working collaboratively with partners to replicate successes and inspire a race to the top across countries,” the U.S. Department of Energy website said.

The launch of the initiative was supported by a number of philanthropic businessmen, companies, and think tanks in the United States.

Participants in the initiative are expected to receive expert and financial support from technical, research and investment agencies and laboratories in the United States. At the same time, the partnership will allow the countries to work together on technical and investment plans, pilot technologies, infrastructure modernization to ensure sustainable decarbonization of the energy system.
