On Oct. 19, 2021, the Bohdan Hawrylyshyn Family Charitable Foundation invited Ukrainians to celebrate the First National Day of Human Responsibility.

The brainchild of Hawrylyshyn, a prominent Ukrainian thinker who authored Declaration of Human Responsibilities, the day encourages people to think and speak out about personal responsibility. The date was chosen to honor his birthday; he would have turned 95 years old. Hawrylyshyn passed away in October 2016.

The occasion has the blessing of parliament: about three months ago, 308 lawmakers supported a resolution establishing the day officially.

Ukrainians can join the celebration by writing a post on social media explaining what the term “responsibility” means to them or tagging at least five friends whom they consider the most responsible and say why.

Also, Ukrainian organizations or communities can participate by sharing the list of responsible actions they’ve already implemented or plan to implement in the future. The hashtags include #I_act_responsibly, #ResponsibilityDay, #5responsiblefriends.

During his life, Hawrylyshyn was a prolific economist, thinker and adviser to top public officials. He was a full-fledged member of the Club of Rome, which is comprised of heads of state, politicians, scientists and business leaders from around the world.

Hawrylyshyn also co-founded the European Management Forum in Davos and was a fellow and member of the board of the World Academy of Art and Science. He also dedicated more than 30 years to the educational field.

Hawrylyshyn founded a charitable foundation that bears his name to train young Ukrainians to be able to transform their homeland using the example of successful European countries.

In 2017, his wife and children created a second foundation called the Bohdan Hawrylyshyn Family Charitable Foundation in his memory.

On the eve of the memory of Havrylyshyn’s birthday, people laid flowers near a stone installed in his honor in the Taras Shevchenko Park in Kyiv.
