Ukraine has thanked the EU for a 1.2 billion euro aid package designed to assist Ukraine in resisting Russian aggression and a possible full-scale invasion.
President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone conversation with President of the European Council Charles Michel on Monday to discuss the funding package and seek new ways of punishing Russian aggression.
According to the presidential press service of Ukraine, the two leaders
“discussed the preparation by the EU of a broad range of preventive economic, political and security sanctions that could restrain further potential escalations.“
EU Commission Chief Ursula Von der Leyen, who spoke with Zelensky on Friday, said the EU aid was designed to "help Ukraine now to address its rapid escalation in financing needs due to the conflict".
On Monday, Von der Leyen urged the European Council and EU lawmakers to urgently approve the emergency support and rapidly disburse a first tranche of 600 million euros. The German politician also urged the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to follow suit and renew their commitment to Ukraine.
