You're reading: Ukraine, Romania start joint military exercises on Danube River

The Riverine 2019 exercise started in Romania on the Danube River. Ukrainian and Romanian navy are taking part in the drills, the press service of the Ukrainian Naval Forces has reported.

“On September 4, Romania launched the bilateral Ukrainian-Romanian exercises Riveraina 2019 with the participation of units of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the maritime security of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, the Naval Forces and the Coast Guard of Romania,” the press service said.

The purpose of the event is to develop joint actions of multinational boat tactical groups on the Danube River to boost their compatibility and capabilities.

Small armored artillery boats Akkerman and Vyshgorod, the Smila training boat and the Mi-14 helicopter of the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are taking part in the exercises, from the Romanian side – two armored patrol boats, two river minesweepers, one patrol boat and a river tugboat.

In general, bilateral exercises will take place over three days on the Danube River, where Ukrainian and Romanian colleagues will jointly work out the basic elements for ensuring security in the canals and river sectors.

The exercises will last until September 6 and will include such basic elements as tactical maneuvering, mine action, search and rescue of a man who fell overboard, and search operations.
