The Ukrainian side will seek the release of Ukrainian citizen Mykhailo Ferents, who was sentenced on Sept. 20 in Belarus to three years in prison, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleh Nikolenko has said.

“Now the verdict has not entered into force, the lawyers have already filed an appeal. We will continue to protect the interests of our citizen by all available means for his release,” Nikolenko said on his Facebook page on Oct. 4.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that on Sept. 20, the Zavodsky District Court of Minsk sentenced Ferents to three years in prison for allegedly participating in actions that grossly violate public order and deliberate damage to property.

“On the same day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine protested to the Belarusian side: we consider the case of the Ukrainian politically motivated, and the verdict unjust and unlawful. There was no evidence of guilt,” he said.
