First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Iryna Gerashchenko believes the parliament and the government of Ukraine should determine the implementation of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement as the key priority.

She wrote on her Facebook page “that will bring us closer to EU membership.”

“The Verkhovna Rada and the Cabinet of Ministers are still lagging behind in the issues of adaptation of legislation and adoption of by-laws, some committees frankly hamper the adoption of European laws, and the ministries lack specialists,” she said.

Gerashchenko stated as first deputy speaker she would focus on the implementation of the Association Agreement during the new session of the parliament, which starts on September 5.

The Association Agreement between the European Union and Ukraine entered into force in full on September 1, 2017. Before that, the economic part of the agreement regarding a free trade area between Ukraine and the European Union has been valid for more than a year and a half.
