A Ukrainian journalist, UA: Ukrainian Radio employee Pavlo Sharoiko, who was detained in Belarus, was visited by the Ukrainian consul, Head of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NSJU) Serhiy Tomilenko has said.

“As far as we know, Ukraine’s consul visited Pavlo,” he said on the air of the 112.ua television channel on Nov.17.

Tomilenko also wrote on his Facebook page that only one defense lawyer was provided to the journalist by the Belarusian authorities.

News about Sharoiko’s detention in Belarus came earlier from Zurab Alasania, the chairman of the National Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine, and Ukrainian Radio General Producer Dmytro Khorkin.

Alasania said Sharoiko was charged with spying, which he described as a standard charge brought against foreign correspondents.

Later, Sharoiko’s wife confirmed his arrest in Minsk.
