You're reading: Ukraine’s passport ranks higher amid global travel restrictions

Ukraine’s passport has won three positions in the latest global Henley & Partners index measuring the most travel-friendly passports worldwide.

Ukrainian passports now rank 41st, same as Vanuatu and higher than Nicaraguan and Venezuelan among 191 countries. In 2020, Ukraine was 44th.

The passports are scored by the total number of destinations that its holders can travel to visa-free, based on data from the International Air Transport Association.

Ukrainian passport holders can visit 130 countries visa-free.

Ukraine’s neighboring Moldova ranked 47th and Russia 50th. Georgia is 51th, while the Belarusian passport takes 70th place.

The countries with the most powerful passports are Japan and Singapore, followed by South Korea and Germany.

Despite having a visa-free regime with most of the European Union countries, Ukrainians can’t currently visit some of them for travel purposes because of the restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus during the global pandemic.

Ukrainians can’t enter France, Germany and Portugal, for example, but can travel to Bulgaria (until Jan. 31). However, restrictions are constantly changing.
