A Ukrainian citizen, a crew member of the Panamax Alexander cargo ship, was found dead on Sunday, director of the consular service department of Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Serhiy Pohoreltsev has said.

“On May 10, 2020, the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico received a message about the disappearance of a citizen of Ukraine, a crew member of the cargo ship Panamax Alexander “(flag of Cyprus, IMO 9233492) on the way to the Mexican port of Mazatlan, Colima. After detecting the absence the seaman on board, the captain initiated a search for a crew member at the place of a possible fall into the sea and an emergency was reported to the port administration of the city of Mazatlan. Mexican Navy personnel took part in the search. The body of the Ukrainian was found by local fishermen,” he told Interfax-Ukraine on May 11.

Pohoreltsev added that a criminal case had been instituted on the fact that Mexican law enforcement agencies are investigating.

“The Embassy of Ukraine in Mexico is taking measures to search for relatives of the deceased citizen of Ukraine. The case is under the control of the consular department of the MFA and Ukraine’s embassy in Mexico,” he said.
