You're reading: Ukrainian court sets hearing of case over Zelensky coffee at quarantined coffee house

A court will hear on June 19 a case over an administrative violation of quarantine restrictions on June 3 when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his delegation had coffee at a local coffee house during a visit to Khmelnytsky, Ukrainian chief sanitary physician Viktor Liashko said.

“In Khmelnytsky, we just wanted to inspect the readiness of public catering facilities to reopening of their indoor premises. A protocol about an administrative offence was drawn up against me. A court session is scheduled for June 19 and I will be fined,” he said on the NV Radio station on June 11.

“No one deliberately violated anything there, as is said now,” Liashko said.

“I have already said that some more quarantine restrictions had to be relaxed exactly the day later, our public catering facilities were to be reopened for indoor parties. We just dropped in to see how these facilities are ready for that. However, as the practice showed, if you want to enter, you must prepare all the documents correctly. Without a document even the chief sanitary physician and the president appeared to be violators. Therefore, we do not contest all of this,” he said.

A fine may reach Hr 17,000, Liashko said.

“The most expensive coffee,” the chief sanitary physician said.

As reported earlier, on June 3, while visiting Khmelnytsky, Zelensky and his delegation had coffee at a local coffee house, which, in accordance with an order of the Ukrainian government, should not have hosted visitors on its premises until at least June 5. The presidential press service published a relevant photograph.

The law enforcers will look into the possible violation of quarantine restrictions by Ukrainian President Zelensky during a working visit to Khmelnytsky, Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko said on June 4.

As a result of an inquiry conducted, policemen drafted administrative protocols for violating the quarantine regulations against the cafeteria’s owner and visitors, including Ukrainian President Zelensky, Ukrainian presidential office head Andriy Yermak, his first deputy Serhiy Trofymov, Ukrainian chief sanitary physician Viktor Liashko, Khmelnytsky State Regional Administration head Dmytro Habinet, and Khmelnytsky Mayor Oleksandr Symchyshyn.

The Ukrainian president is facing a fine of Hr 17,000 for breaching the quarantine regulations but, as Gerashchenko has said, first it should be established whether Zelensky is guilty in this incident.
