You're reading: Ukrainians support strengthening of army, tomos and visa-free travel to EU

Ukrainians are proud of strengthening the country’s army, believe receiving a tomos [granting autocephaly to the new Orthodox Church of Ukraine] is important and are convinced visa-free travel to the EU brings Ukraine closer to Europe. These are the results of a survey conducted by Center for Social and Marketing Research “SOCIS.”

Some 32.9 percent of respondents said they are proud of how the country’s military has grown stronger since 2014, while 35.6 percent agreed in part, with 19.4 percent disagreeing with the statement. Some 12.1 percent of respondents had difficulty answering the question.

Some 28.2 percent of those polled said receiving a tomos on autocephaly for the Orthodox Church of Ukraine is important for the country, while 28.2 percent said they agreed in part. Some 27.9 percent disagreed and 12.1 percent had difficulty answering the question.

More than a quarter of respondents, 27 percent, of those polled expressed concern that a possible compromise with Russian President Vladimir Putin could lead to the loss of independence for Ukraine, with 27 percent agreeing in part. Some 24.3 percent percent disagreed and 21.6 percent had difficulty expressing an opinion.

Poll results showed 26.7 percent agreeing with the statement that Ukraine’s visa-free travel with the EU is a significant step for bringing the country closer to Europe. Some 36.5 percent partially agreed, and 24.7 percent disagreed. Some 12 percent had difficulty answering the question.

Respondents in the poll represented the Ukraine’s adult population by gender, age (18 and older) and residence by region (city/village). More than 2,000 people took part in the face-to-face survey conducted at the respondents’ place of residence.
