You're reading: Ukrainians surrender more than 6,500 weapons, 160,000 pieces of ammo to police

During the period of the month to voluntarily surrender arms and ammunition, Ukrainians voluntarily turned in more than 6,500 weapons, 160,000 rounds of ammunition and 127 kilograms of explosives.

According to the press service of the National Police of Ukraine, over the month of voluntary surrender of weapons, explosive materials and special means to the police units, the population voluntarily surrendered 6,553 weapons, including 520 military weapons, 501 hunting rifles, 4,518 smoothbore weapons, 627 knives, 168 homemade weapons, as well as 219 “other” types of weapons.

In addition, citizens turned over 2,275 special substances weapons, of which 1,725 were pistols and revolvers and 550 cartridge-loaded weapons which shoot rubber bullets or special charges.

“Some 159,823 rounds of ammunition were turned in. They included 768 artillery rounds, 209 landmines, 348 grenades, 188 tube missiles and almost 127 kilograms of explosive materials, as well as 12 homemade bombs,” the police said, adding that over the same period 3,665 hunting weapons were surrendered.

The police notice said: “Some 993 citizens were absolved of their liability pursuant to Article 263 (illegal use of firearms, weapons or explosive devices) of Ukraine’s Criminal Code.”
