The Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the City of Sevastopol has launched criminal proceedings over the illegal arrest of 21 activists in Simferopol, the agency has reported on its website.

Asan Akhtemov, who was arrested by Russian authorities in occupied Crimea on Sept. 3 on suspicion of damaging a gas pipeline, stands holding a Crimean Tatar flag. Akhmetov said that he was beaten and tortured with electric shocks, when the Russian police were forcing him to confess.
