The losses of Ukrzaliznytsia from passenger traffic in 2020 increased by 26%, to Hr 8.7 billion, chairman of the company’s board Volodymyr Zhmak said during a press conference.

He noted that the passenger transport sector was hit hardest by quarantine restrictions due to the pandemic. Passenger traffic in 2020 decreased by 56%, to 68 million passengers.

“Ukrzaliznytsia assets – both locomotives and cars – are worn out by 90%. Without renewal, the operating fleet of passenger cars will be reduced by 77% by 2030, to 567 cars. Therefore, we are grateful to the government, the Verkhovna Rada, and the president that this year for the first time since independence, the state provided Hr 4 billion in the state budget for the renewal of the rolling stock,” Zhmak added.
