You're reading: UN concerned over transfer Berkut police officers to occupied Donbas

The transfer of five former Berkut police officers to the territory controlled by the self-proclaimed “republics” in Donbas during release of detainees will significantly complicate prosecution of this case and may undermine victims’ right to justice, said UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission to Ukraine.

“The transfer of five Berkut servicemen, accused of killing 48 and injuring 80 Maidan protesters on February 20, 2014, to the territory controlled by the self-proclaimed ‘republics’ will significantly complicate prosecution of this case and may undermine victims’ right to justice,” the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission to Ukraine wrote on its Facebook.

According to its report, the mission shares the concern of victims and relatives of those killed at Maidan. At the same time, it welcomes the simultaneous release of detainees that took place on 29 December at a crossing point Mayorske in Donetsk region.
