Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron have discussed measures to urgently resume the process of releasing Ukrainian prisoners of war and other detainees in Russian-occupied Donbas and illegally convicted Ukrainian prisoners in the Russian Federation and Russian-annexed Crimea.

Ukraine and Russian-backed rebels on December 27 began to exchange more than 300 prisoners in the war-torn east of the country, the largest such swap since the insurgency broke out in 2014.
