Vinnytsia has won the international Child Friendly Cities Inspire Awards for participating of pupils in positive changes at local schools, reports UNICEF.

The Vinnytsia project was nominated in the first category “Participation of children and youth in the life of the city,” and the Ukrainian city shared the victory in the nomination with Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), the press service of UNICEF in Ukraine said on Oct. 17.

The draft school budget of participation has brought victory to Vinnytsia, which became the best example of attracting children to city government.

Vinnytsia held a competition of children’s initiatives to introduce changes in schools, selected 11 of the most interesting ideas and funded them from the city budget for a total of Hr 1 million, the UN Children’s Fund said.

The applicants were evaluated according to four criteria: demonstrated results, creativity and innovation, the possibility and expediency of repeating the implemented project, compliance with the principles of the initiative “A society friendly to children and youth.”

The award provides for awarding cities in six categories. The award ceremony took place in Cologne on Oct. 17 during the first global summit of child-friendly cities.

The international prize was established by UNICEF as part of the Worldwide Initiative, a Society Friendly to Children and Youth. With this award, the UNICEF celebrates creative, innovative and inspirational city solutions aimed at improving the lives of children and youth.
