President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey was reelected on June 24 — a move which granted the leader more sweeping powers than ever before.

“It seems the nation has entrusted me with the duty of the presidency, and to us a very big responsibility in the legislature,” Erdogan said during his victory speech early June 25. “The winner is Turkey, the Turkish nation. The winner is all the aggrieved people in our region, all the oppressed in the world.”
