In honor of World Humanitarian Day, UNHCR Ukraine and the Kyiv Post are holding an online discussion about the incredible story and legacy of a legendary United Nations diplomat and humanitarian: Sergio Vieira de Mello.
It was 17 years ago when his life and the lives of his 21 colleagues ended tragically in a bombing of the United Nations office in Baghdad. World Humanitarian Day was soon established following that horrible incident to honor humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes. This year, Netflix has released two films about Sergio Vieira de Mello – a documentary and a feature film, both named “Sergio.”
The achievements of Sergio are widely known and yet there is not much information on his work and relation to Ukraine. During the online event, we will speak about it as well as of the achievements by humanitarian workers worldwide and in Ukraine, the story of UNHCR in Ukraine, and more.
