New President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy has received a U.S. delegation of the Donald Trump Administration and U.S. Congress, who arrived in Kyiv to attend an official swearing-in ceremony, and discussed with them reforms and ways to counter Russian aggression.
Zelenskiy thanked the U.S. for its leadership in restoring the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and for helping to promote internal reforms, the presidential press service said.
“The United States is a powerful and very serious partner for Ukraine, above all, in overcoming Russia’s aggression. We will not be able to overcome Russian aggression in Donbas and Crimea alone. Therefore, we need your help. I would like to urge you that the United States keeps increasing sanctions against the Russian Federation,” he said.
Zelenskiy also thanked the U.S. for assistance in the security sector.
He added he was ready to implement transparent, open and democratic reforms in Ukraine: “We have a very good example of your country. Reforming Ukraine as a whole, in all areas, will be held not after the ceasefire in Donbas, but in parallel. Because we need this. We want to become a European country in terms of values and transparency,” he said.
Zelenskiy thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for his greetings and expressed hope for a meeting in the near future.
The Ukrainian president also emphasized the importance of further comprehensive development of the Ukrainian-American strategic partnership, first of all, through the implementation of mutually beneficial programs of cooperation in the energy sector and deepening of cooperation in the field of security.
The U.S. party was represented by presidential delegates led by U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker, and U.S. Senator Ron Johnson.
