You're reading: Zelensky offers head of Constitutional Court Tupytsky to resign

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky invites the head of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, Oleksandr Tupytsky, to resign.

“It seems to me that today we are talking, in principle, about one person – head of the Constitutional Court, Mr. Tupytsky. I don’t want to offend him, but it seems to me that if he has and retains at least some dignity, but he has family, there are people nearby who see the reaction of society, politicians, the president, then in order to get out of this situation, so that people do not puzzle over how to adopt this or that law, he (Tupytsky) should simply resign,” the president said on the air of Freedom of Speech program on the ICTV channel on Nov. 2.

Zelensky believes that such a decision would be “the most liberal that can exist today.” “And then calmly proceed to renewing the composition of the Constitutional Court,” he said.

The President said that he would not withdraw his bill to terminate the powers of the current Constitutional Court, because he is sure that he is doing the right thing.

“If I knew that I was wrong, and ordinary people would tell me that I’m wrong, that this is a ‘hot’ decision, contrary to the opinion of Ukrainian society, I would immediately withdraw and not think about any political defeats. I don’t care, I do not think and do not run for ratings. I did not come to this position until the end of my life. I am the president of a democratic country, and not of other countries, which we all know very well,” he said.
