You're reading: Zelensky signs law to strengthen liability for domestic, gender-based violence

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed the law on amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses of Ukraine regarding increasing liability for committing domestic violence and gender-based violence.

According to the President’s Office of Ukraine, the document allows the victim to receive compensation for material damage and moral damage caused as a result of domestic violence.

“According to the law, military personnel, liable for military service and reservists, as well as persons of the commanding staff of the NABU, privates and commanding officers of the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine, the Civil Protection Service, the State Security Service and the police are administratively responsible on a general basis for committing domestic violence, gender-based violence, failure to comply with an urgent restraining order or failure to inform the police about the place of their temporary stay in the event of such a prescription,” the office said.

These offenses are punishable by a fine of 10 to 20 tax-free minimum incomes of citizens or community service for a period of 30 to 40 hours, or administrative arrest for a period of up to ten days.

For repeated offenses committed during the year, a fine from 20 to 40 non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens or public works for a period of 40 to 60 hours, or an administrative detention for a period of up to 15 days is provided.

This law comes into force on the day following the day of its publication.
