White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the leaders will demonstrate “G7 unity in our collective response, including building on our unprecedented sanctions to impose severe cost for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s war.”

Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 by forcibly seizing the Crimean Peninsula and occupying parts of the two easternmost regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Putin ordered a full-scale invasion on Feb. 24 in what is the European continent’s bloodiest war since World War II.

The G7 countries consist of the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, and Italy.
