Georgia may soon see a rise in COVID-19 cases and the number of coronavirus-related deaths, Georgian Deputy Health Minister Tamara Gabunia said at a press briefing on June 29.
“The epidemiological situation may unfold in such a way after the Indian Delta strain of coronavirus has been detected in our country. We have identified seven such cases in the past 24 hours,” Gabunia said.
Currently, between 10% and 20% of COVID-19 patients in Georgia are being diagnosed with the Indian strain, she said.
“More than 1,000 cases of COVID-19 have been identified over the past 24 hours, which is the highest daily number over the past few weeks,” Gabunia said.
Georgia has registered 1,194 new COVID-19 cases and 22 related deaths in the past day, the Health Ministry said.
According to a government decision, almost all coronavirus-related restrictions in Georgia have been lifted. The curfew in the cities will be lifted on July 1.
