As China continues to avoid condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine, its media are spreading Kremlin-friendly narratives.
The Global Times, which calls the war in Ukraine “Ukraine crisis” with a banner depicting Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin facing each other, has published a series of caricatures featuring the main protagonist – “evil Uncle Sam”.
The caricaturist Liu Rui shows Uncle’s attempts to obstruct a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, support “neo-Nazis in Ukraine”, and “hide” its bio laboratories. According to her, he is also attempting to drag more countries into NATO, being what she describes as Uncle “Lord of War” Sam.
“The 15-member UN Security Council on Wednesday failed to adopt a resolution on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine. Two members (Russia and China) voted in favor of the text and 13 others abstained. The text submitted by Russia was rejected,” reads one of the write-ups to the caricature of the failed humanitarian deal on March 23.
Put forward by Russia and supported by China, Belarus, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and Syria, most countries deemed it an attempt to distort the reality of the war and de-authorize the initiator of the incursion.
Other caricatures include depictions of “NATO the Octopus”, capturing the world with its “tentacles”, a critique of the U.S.’s decision to ban Russian oil imports, and its response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
In its editorial “Toothless Western drama queens sanction Russian cats, ridiculous beyond imagination” dated March 4, the outlet also lambasted the decision of the Fédération Internationale Féline to ban Russian-bred cats from its shows and cat owners who live in Russia “amid the spiraling crisis in Ukraine”. The article features the evil Uncle Sam holding a spiked bat with the “sanctions” sign on it.
