As Ukrainians gather with prayers in celebration of Christmas on January 6, the United States will commemorate the first anniversary of the deadly attack on its capital building.
A full day of events is planned across the United States, including demonstrations and prayer services.
Last year’s attack took place as members of the U.S. Congress gathered to confirm the results of the November 2020 presidential elections results in which Joseph Biden defeated then-President Donald Trump.
On that day, pro-Trump activists stormed what is considered the “citadel of American democracy,” destroying congressional offices and sending members of Congress into hiding. The insurrection, spurred by Trump’s assertions that the 2020 presidential election results were fraudulent, resulted in the deaths of five individuals and thousands of dollars in damage.
Washington will hold several events commemorating that attack. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced a “full program” at the Capital, according to The Washingtonian, which will include a morning prayer session and a moment of silence on the floor of the House of Representatives. CNN reported that U.S. President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will also deliver remarks commemorating the tragic day.
More than 100 activist groups will hold a Day of Remembrance and Actions with vigils across the country, including a candlelight ceremony on the Washington DC National Mall.
