TBILISI – The state of emergency imposed in Georgia due to the spread of coronavirus in March will not be prolonged after May 22, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said on May 15.

“The state of emergency was declared on March 21, after which the state of emergency was prolonged once, and we have decided today that the government will not ask the parliament to prolong the state of emergency after May 22,” Gakharia said at the presentation of an anti-crisis plan in the sphere of education.

At the same time, the lifting of the state of emergency does not mean that all coronavirus restrictions which are in place in Georgia will be lifted fully and simultaneously, he said.

“Some of the restrictions that epidemiologists believe are necessary need to stay in place. In order for that to happen, we will turn to the parliament to begin discussions of legislative changes that will make it possible to manage the epidemic and risks without declaring a state of emergency,” Gakharia said.

According to the most recent information, 671 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Georgia. Twelve people have died and 393 have recovered.
