CHISINAU – The Moldovan opposition pro-presidential Party of Socialists (PSRM) will begin a campaign next week to collect signatures in support of a transition to presidential rule, President Igor Dodon said on his Facebook page, after taking part in a meeting of the PSRM Republican Council.

“We addressed actions that would have to be taken to resolve the situation surrounding the blockage of dozens of initiatives proposed by the president and aimed at resolving the country’s social problems and the sabotage of the president’s efforts to strengthen strategic partnership with the Russian Federation and promote new avenues of Moldovan-Russian cooperation,” he said.

The Moldovan authorities have prohibited a consultative referendum on “several issues of national importance” initiated by the president, he said.

“We, for our part, will hold this referendum in each populated area of the country. Along with colleagues from the PSRM, we decided to begin a national campaign on October 16 to collect signatures in support of a transition to presidential rule. I thank our colleagues from the PSRM for their support. We will win together,” Dodon said.

Interfax reported earlier that the Party of Socialists had simultaneously held three rallies in the southern, northern, and central parts of Moldova on September 24. Each rally was attended by around 2,000-3,000 people, who expressed support for the president’s initiatives on switching to presidential rule.

“The PSRM is announcing the start of a nationwide campaign to collect signatures for a transition to presidential rule and investing the president with the executive function in Moldova. Within the framework of our campaign, we intend to collect the signatures of at least 70% of Moldovan citizens having the right to vote. PSRM representatives will enter each house and each apartment to enable each person living in the country to voice their opinion on whether the country should be governed by the people or by a bunch of usurpers,” a resolution adopted at the PSRM rallies said.
