The three candidates vying to lead Germany’s main governing party have a lot in common — but they’re not as similar as they may seem. Armin Laschet, Friedrich Merz and Norbert Röttgen are all white, male baby boomers from the same state, North Rhine-Westphalia. But they are making distinctly different pitches to lead the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
