TBILISI – Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili is continuing his hunger strike in prison, but has agreed to medical intervention by doctors.

In a statement released by his lawyer, Saakashvili said he is refusing to eat.

“I have gone on hunger strike to demand an end to the use of the justice system for political persecution in Georgia and a return to the normal democratic process. While I am in prison, I will not take food in any form, and I am ready to die. At the same time, I want to keep a sound mind and the ability to work until the end, and for that reason, I am ready for medical intervention by doctors,” Saakashvili said.

Lawyer Dmitry Sadzaglishvili has said that Saakashvili’s health is currently stable, and there are no negative signs at the moment.

A case conference earlier recommended that Saakashvili, who has been on hunger strike in the Rustavi prison for 20 days, be hospitalized.
