TBILISI – The British destroyer HMS Defender entered the Georgian port of Batumi on June 25, the British embassy in Georgia said.

“The UK continues to work with partners & allies in promoting security in Black Sea region,” the embassy said in its commentary on the call made by the Defender destroyer to the Batumi port.

The ships of NATO countries often visit Georgian territorial waters. As to specifically British ships, a different British air defense destroyer, the HMS Dragon, last visited the Batumi port in October 2020.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on June 23 that the Defender had breached the Russian state border in the Black Sea near Crimea. The Russian troops and border guards fired warning shots to make the British ship change its course.
