TBILISI – The United States’ Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will provide additional assistance to Georgia in the form of $3 million to support its measures to respond to the coronavirus pandemic, U.S. Ambassador in Tbilisi Kelly Degnan said in a statement released by the embassy on May 8.

It was reported last month that the U.S. government allocated $1.1 million as financial assistance to Georgia in order to support its healthcare.

In addition, the ambassador announced that the U.S. had decided to provide assistance to Georgia in the form of an additional donation of 27,000 tonnes of high-quality wheat.

In December 2019, 27,000 tonnes of U.S. wheat have already been delivered to Georgia and additional aid is related to the situation surrounding the pandemic, she said.

“As other countries are banning export of their wheat and grains, the U.S. is finding ways to help by providing more,” Degnan said.

U.S. wheat is being delivered to Georgia as part of the U.S. government’s program called Food for Progress, she said.

It was reported earlier on May 8 that the number of coronavirus fatalities in Georgia has increased from nine to ten.

According to latest information, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country is 623 and the number of recoveries is 288. A total of 4,702 people are quarantined and 459 are supervised by medics in hospitals.
