Russia's War Against Ukraine
OP-ED
Mark Adomanis: Russia is still Ukraine’s largest trading partner
Pro-Russian rebels patrol their sector of Eastern Ukraine near the town of Yenakiyevo, east of Donetsk, on Dec. 31, 2014.
Russia and Ukraine have been fighting an undeclared war for most of the past year: thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced as Russia-backed separatists (aided in numerous instances by active-duty Russian soldiers) have fought against the central government. It's been a total disaster, and is probably the closest thing to a genuine interstate war that Europe has seen since the dark days of the 1940's. Ukraine's current government is probably the most strongly anti-Russian in history, and it has loudly proclaimed its desire to move towards the European Union and away from Moscow.
