Donald Trump’s tweet that “the United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes” ignited a stage-four meltdown among his critics. The media outrage multiplied when he later declared: “Let it be an arms race.” The US “will outmatch them [our nuclear adversaries] at every pass and outlast them all.”
Although the Trump tweet is in the spirit of Barack Obama’s one trillion dollar nuclear modernization program, Trump’s critics accuse him of threatening peace and stability, encouraging nuclear proliferation, violating non-proliferation treaties, backtracking on Reagan’s nuclear policy, and having a very scary misunderstanding of nuclear warfare.
