Taras Kuzio: Russia annexes Donbas but loses Ukraine
A picture taken on Oct. 12, 2014 shows the Kushugumske cemetery in the suburbs of Zaporizhia, south-eastern Ukraine, where the remains of unidentified Ukrainian soldiers killed in fighting against pro-Russia separatists are buried.
Internationally unrecognised 'elections' held on Nov. 2 in the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics (DNR and LNR) have entrenched Russia's annexation of the eastern Donbas region and established a de facto new border with Ukraine. A proposed Russian treaty with the DNR and LNR is suspiciously similar to its September 2008 recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
