Russian President Boris Yeltsin (R) and his Ukrainian counterpart Leonid Kuchma close in for a kiss prior to their talks in the Kremlin on March 29, 1997. On May 31 of that year, they signed a friendship treaty that was supposed to recognize the inviolability of existing borders, respect the territorial integrity and not use the territory to harm each other’s security. Ex-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko formally terminated the treaty on Sept. 6, 2018, more than four years after the Kremlin invaded the Crimean peninsula and the eastern Donbas. Russia continues to wage war against Ukraine, killing 14,000 people and illegally occupying 7 percent of the nation’s territory.
