Why Ukraine celebrates Unity Day

Ukraine’s Unity Day is celebrated each year on January 22.

It marks the date in 1919 when the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Ukrainian People’s Republic, signed a treaty to unite into one independent nation.

In 1990, during the final days of the Soviet Union, Ukrainians celebrated Unity Day by forming a symbolic human chain that stretched nearly 500 kilometers from Kyiv to Lviv.
