You're reading: Ukraine takes golds at first European Championships

Ukraine ranked seventh in the medals standings after the opening weekend of the inaugural European Championships, a multi-sports event hosted jointly on Aug. 2-12 by Glasgow in Scotland and the German capital Berlin.

As of Aug. 6, Ukraine had a haul of nine medals – three golds, five silvers, and one bronze.

The first gold for Ukraine came on Aug. 3, day two of the championships, when swimmer Mykhalo Romanchuk won the 400 meters freestyle final at the Tollcross International Swimming Center in Glasgow with a time of 3:45.18.

Romanchuk also took silver in the 1,500 meters freestyle on Aug. 5.

The second gold was also taken on Aug. 2, when Roman Gladysh won the final of the men’s 15-kilometer indoor cycling scratch race at the Emirates Arena velodrome in Glasgow. France’s Adrien Garel took the silver, and Switzerland’s Tristan Marguet – the bronze.

Gold number three was won by Ukraine’s synchronized swimming team in the final of the combination free routine at the Scotstoun Sports Campus in Glasgow on Aug. 5. The team’s winning score was 94.4667, with the teams from Italy and Spain taking the silver and bronze medals with scores of 92.6000 and 91.4667, respectively.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s mixed diving team of Oleg Kolodiy and Sofiia Lyskun are hopefuls to win Ukraine’s fourth gold on Aug. 6 at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.

Russia currently leads the medal table with 10 golds. Italy is second with seven, and Great Britain third with six.

The first European Championships features events in athletics, aquatics, cycling, golf, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon. The athletics competition, with 1,500 competitors, is being held in Berlin, Germany, while the other events are being hosted in Scotland. Edinburgh is hosting the diving events and Gleneagles the golf, while the remaining events are being held in Glasgow.
