You're reading: COVID-19 in Ukraine: 777 dead, 26,514 cases, 550 new infections

The number of officially confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ukraine has reached 26,514 as of 9 a.m. on June 6 according to the Center for Public Health at the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, and the National Security and Defense Council.

In total, 777 people have died from the disease in Ukraine and 11,812 patients have recovered.

In the past 24 hours, Ukraine has identified 550 new COVID-19 cases, 15 people have died, and 440 have recovered.

For the third day in a row, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 is growing in Ukraine. This was announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at a meeting on the coronavirus pandemic on June 5 chaired by President Volodymyr Zelensky. The government said that if the trend continues, the easing of quarantine measures could worsen the epidemiological situation in the country.

“People need to be reminded that thoughtlessness regarding coronavirus protection poses great threats during the COVID-19 epidemic. It is difficult to find a balance between returning to normal life and safety. The invisible danger is the worst because today you do not see the point in the mask, and tomorrow the number of patients will grow,” Volodymyr Zelensky stressed in a statement.

Since June 4, at least 16,793 COVID-19 tests have been conducted, including 11,142 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and 5,651 antibody tests (IFA).

A total of at least 403,551 PCR tests have been carried out since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak in the country, the health ministry says.

The government signed a decree to launch mass antibody testing for COVID-19 on May 19, which is free for people with COVID-19 symptoms, those who came into contact with infected patients and people who are in risk groups, such as medical workers and the police. Unlike the diagnostic PCR test, the antibody test shows whether a person had the coronavirus in the past and developed some immunity against it.

Chernivtsi Oblast in western Ukraine remains the region worst hit by COVID-19 in Ukraine, with 3,585 confirmed cases, including 66 new infections over the past 24 hours.

It is followed by the city of Kyiv, with a total of 3,375 cases, and Lviv Oblast with 2,053 cases.

The highest number of new cases in the last 24 hours has been recorded in the city of Kyiv, with 83 patients confirmed as having contracted COVID-19. In Lviv, 65 new cases were identified.

On June 1, Ukraine entered the third stage of easing COVID-19 restrictions under the “adaptive quarantine” plan.

According to this plan, the government will ease restrictions every 10 days for oblasts that meet certain criteria up until June 22, the current expiration date for the quarantine. Those criteria include a steady decline in new confirmed coronavirus cases, a growing number of recovered patients and bed occupancy rates in hospitals treating COVID-19 patients.

On June 5, Ukraine is scheduled to allow the reopening of indoor restaurants and the relaunch of domestic air transportation. On June 15, the country plans to restart international air transportation.
