In the past 24 hours, Ukraine has recorded a record-breaking 33 deaths from COVID-19, 280 patients have been hospitalized and 531 people recovered.

“You see that the numbers amaze us every day. Practically every day we break an anti-record. Let’s think about our attitude towards the quarantine rules imposed in the country,” Health Minister Maksym Stepanov said at his morning briefing on Aug. 7.

Stepanov also said that the disease is becoming more severe, according to the doctors.

“We have a lot of complicated cases, the course of the disease began to change. It is very difficult to recover from this disease,” Stepanov said.

The largest numbers of new cases were registered in Kyiv city (186), Odesa Oblast (156), Lviv Oblast (152), Kharkiv Oblast (146) and Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (131). Of all new COVID-19 cases, 103 were diagnosed among children and 93 among medical workers.

Since Aug. 3, new rules for COVID-19 quarantine have come into force in Ukraine: Communities, rather than entire regions, are now divided into green, yellow, orange and red levels of severity of COVID-19 spread. The authorities in districts, cities and towns will have to tighten or relax quarantine restrictions in accordance with these categorizations. The levels are based on four indicators that will be reviewed every five days.

On Aug. 2, the health ministry released an updated list of “green” and “red” countries — those where the COVID-19 situation is better and worse than in Ukraine, respectively. Foreigners arriving in Ukraine from green zone countries have to present medical insurance covering COVID-19. Those coming from the red zone have to have medical insurance and either take a PCR test or self-quarantine for 14 days with the tracking app Diy Vdoma.
