According to Deputy Health Minister Viktor Lyashko, who joined Stepanov during the morning briefing, out of 23,000 beds in hospitals prepared for COVID-19 patients 3,895 are currently occupied.
Additionally, 350 intensive care beds are taken and 82 patients are on lung ventilators.
Lyashko said the health ministry is preparing hospitals for the second wave of infections that is inevitably coming in some regions of the country. According to him, 11,576 additional beds are prepared to receive the second wave of coronavirus patients.
Since June 1, the Ukrainian government has begun to rapidly reopen the country’s economy, and the number of new COVID-19 cases has started to rise. On June 15, Ukraine reopened its borders and relaunched international passenger air travel.
“We all confused the easing of quarantine with the cancellation of all restrictions,” Stepanov said during his June 16 press conference, after he was asked why Ukraine is witnessing a rise in new COVID-19 cases.
“(People) are neglecting all recommendations of the health ministry,” he added.
On June 23, the Kyiv city government issued new rules for the operation of indoor restaurants, and restaurant owners indicated that they would reopen.
