- Ukrainian lawmaker Olha Bohomolets of the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko submitted to the Central Election Commission documents for registration as a candidate for president.
- Russian tank commanders are allegedly refusing to deploy their armored vehicles against Ukrainian forces in the country’s eastern Donbas region for fear of Ukraine’s new Javelin anti-tank missiles, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said.
- Some 850 OSCE observers will come to Ukraine to monitor the upcoming presidential elections, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, or ODIHR, told the Kyiv Post.
- Ukrainian lawmakers honored the memory of those who died during the defense of the Donetsk airport in 2014-2015. Jan. 16 is informally known as the Day of the Ukrainian Cyborgs – as the defenders of the airport were nicknamed for their superhuman efforts to fight off Russian attempts to sieze the airport. The cyborgs were finally defeated on Jan. 22, 2015.
- Ukrainian tennis player Lesya Tsurenko is knocked out of the Australian Open in the second round, losing to U.S. player Amanda Anisimova.

Russia’s war on Ukraine
- Russia-led forces mounted five attacks on Ukrainian army positions in Donbas in the past 24 hours, with one Ukrainian soldier reported as wounded in action.
- The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM) said in its report for Jan. 15 that heavy weapons of Russian-backed forces in Donbas are located beyond the withdrawal lines but outside designated storage sites.

- Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan said passenger flows to the Russian Federation fell by 18 percent in 2018.
- Ukrainian startup Allset, which develops online services for restaurants in the United States, announced it had partnered with Google.
- Limassol District Court in Cyprus ordered the seizure of movable and immovable property worth almost $46 million from Ukrainian billionaire Dmytro Firtash.
- Ukraine in 2018 saw the best macroeconomic indicators for the last five to seven years, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Yakiv Smolii said at a press conference in Kyiv.
