Honest History: Debunking myths about Ukraine’s past
“Ukrainians and Russians are one nation.” “Ukrainians massively collaborated with the Nazis.” “Russians populate eastern Ukraine.” “Crimea is a historically Russian land.” These are just some of the myths rooted in Ukraine’s history and widely exploited by modern Russian propaganda.
Propaganda widely uses controversial or complicated episodes of Ukraine’s past to undermine the country’s independence and territorial integrity. It’s been reinventing history to support modern Russia’s imperial ambitions and justify its claims for other countries’ territories.
With the Honest History series, we’re telling the true story.
Honest History is a series of 13 stories and 13 videos that examine and explain the most controversial or complicated episodes of the Ukrainian history. Written and narrated by the staff members of the Kyiv Post, Ukraine’s biggest English-language newspaper, it’s a first-of-its-kind attempt to explain to the English-speaking audience how modern Ukraine came to be.
The Honest History series is supported by the Black Sea Trust, a project of the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Opinions expressed do not necessarily represent those of the Black Sea Trust, the German Marshall Fund or its partners.
